Call for local Superules players CRAIGIEBURN Superules club has commenced training ahead of the upcoming AFL Masters season, with the club encouraging locals aged 35 and above to take up the sport. "We really want to get the message across to people in the local area that a Superules club exists, and that there is a place for guys over 35 to come and have a kick, " club president Brian Hall said. The club has recruited several players from the surrounding districts since its establishment in 2004, and has continued the trend with Kilmore resident and ex-Lancefield footballer, Shane Rogers, among those to commit for the 2010 season. A number of other players from the area, including residents from Wallan and Beveridge, have attended training and are expected to line-up. The club also has a new coach, with Michael Ball, who has played with the club the past three seasons, at the helm. There has been solid numbers at training, with over 30 players attending the opening session. Craigieburn Superules Club currently has two sides – the over 35s who compete in division two of the Victorian Metro Superules competition, and the over 40 Masters who play in division 2/3. The club is hopeful of expanding to include a third side – for over 47s. The rules of the competition are similar to regular AFL, with each side fielding 22 players, although some rules are lightly modified to reduce the risk of injury. Seasons are 11 rounds long, with matches played every second Sunday. Like the AFL, finals are played at the end of the home and away season, and players also have the opportunity to compete in the National Titles, with Vic Metro and Vic Country squads selected to play against the other states and territories. Craigieburn Superules Club’s over 35 side has had much success since joining the competition, including making the grand final in its second and third seasons and moving from division three to division two. The side dropped down the ladder last season, but with an influx of local recruits, is expected to be back at the top again. The 2010 season will commence in early April. However, the fixture has not been released with the league looking to restructure the competition to incorporate ‘zones’, grouping clubs in the northern areas together. Craigieburn Superules Club trains Monday and Wednesday evenings at its home ground – D S. Aitken Reserve, Craigieburn – from 6pm. For more
